Zheleznova, Kuznetsov – Coal reserves of the world’s countries
The book by Zheleznova and Kuznetsov, “Coal Reserves of the World,” compares coal classifications and their classification parameters used in different countries. It presents principles for estimating total geological and probable reserves in the world’s major coal-producing countries, summarizes data on the distribution of coal reserves by country and continent, the extent of reserve exploration, and the dynamics of their change over time. It examines the geological patterns of coal accumulation distribution across geological systems and formations of various genetic types, provides information on the main coal basins of leading coal-producing countries, the dynamics and prospects for coal production worldwide, and the main areas of its use.
The book by Zheleznova and Kuznetsov, “Coal Reserves of the World,” is intended for specialists studying the geology of coal deposits and fuel and energy resources.
Coal, oil shale, and peat account for 93% of global fossil fuel reserves, while oil and gas account for 7%. Taking into account their calorific value, the share of these fossil fuels in the world’s energy (extractable) resources will be 74% and 26%, respectively. In the current fuel and energy balance, solid fuels account for less than 35%, while oil and gas account for more than 60% (1978). The energy crisis of the 1970s forced developed consumer countries to take measures aimed at reducing the share of oil in their fuel and energy balances. However, most experts’ forecasts indicate that this will only slow the growth of oil and gas in overall fuel consumption, and only in the subsequent period will the importance of solid fuels in the global fuel and energy balance likely increase.
The development and widespread use of nuclear, geothermal, solar, and other forms of energy may introduce some adjustments to these forecasts, but in any case, the continued growth in energy consumption raises the assessment of all types of fuel and energy resources and a number of global problems.
In recent years, a number of countries have focused their national economic policies on securing domestic energy resources. Consequently, the role of coal has increased, and programs are being implemented to expand its production and use. Measures are being taken to improve coal’s competitiveness, both by expanding and reducing production costs and by improving its utilization technology. Coal prices are being reduced primarily through: increasing the capacity of newly constructed and reconstructed coal mining enterprises; expanding open-pit coal mining; and mechanization and automation of mining operations.
This book by Zheleznova and Kuznetsov, “Coal Reserves of the World,” assesses the availability of energy and industrial coal resources and reserves worldwide. The focus is on the total geological coal reserves by country.

2. Data for the country and other socialist countries, published in national publications of these countries.
3. Abstracts of various articles published in the Abstracts Journal of the All-Union Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of the Academy of Sciences.
4. Coal production reports in capitalist and developing countries published in the Mining Journal Annual Review, as well as reports on coal production in socialist countries.
