Boyko – Thermal Power Plants Tutorial – Calculation and Design of Recuperative Heat Exchangers for Thermal Power Plants
Boyko’s book, “Thermal Power Plants: A Study Guide,” examines the design of recuperative heat exchangers from the perspective of modern understanding of the physical processes occurring in heaters, taking into account design solutions, operating modes, and coolant parameters. The guide contains a methodology and the necessary reference materials for the design calculation of heat exchangers for surface-type thermal power plants.
Boyko’s book, “Thermal Power Plants: A Study Guide,” is designed for students of power engineering and technical universities to complete coursework and diploma projects for specialties 140101.65 – “Thermal Power Plants,” 140104.65 – “Industrial Thermal Power Engineering,” and 140105.65 – “Physics of Geotechnology.” It can also be used by students majoring in other thermal power engineering specialties.
Steam turbine unit (STU) heat exchangers are large, metal-intensive, and expensive pieces of equipment that significantly impact, and sometimes determine, the efficiency and reliability of the overall thermal power plant. According to estimates by the All-Russian Thermal Engineering Institute (Moscow), with constant live steam and intermediate steam parameters, the contribution to the overall efficiency improvement of STUs achieved by improving the characteristics of heat exchangers (condensers, network water heaters, regenerative heating systems, oil coolers, etc.) can reach approximately 30%.
The complexity of the processes occurring in STU heat exchangers is due to the combined influence of a large number of factors determining the efficiency and reliability of the units. An analysis of previously known calculation methods for STU heat exchangers revealed that a number of factors were either not considered at all or were considered incorrectly. This circumstance necessitated the refinement of some methods and, in some cases, new developments.
This textbook is intended for students majoring in power engineering and power plant engineering at universities, students taking retraining and advanced training courses for thermal power plant personnel, and engineering and technical personnel involved in the design, manufacture, and operation of turbine units.
In preparing this textbook, the author drew on the methods used in constructing and presenting materials in similar textbooks previously used in university teaching, as well as her own teaching methods and experience in lecturing and conducting workshops for university students and students taking retraining and advanced training courses for thermal power plant operating personnel.
In the book “Thermal Power Plants: A Tutorial,” the author sought to implement a systematic approach to the calculation of heat exchange apparatus for steam turbine plants, based on modern concepts of the physical processes occurring in these apparatuses, taking into account typical design solutions, the place of the apparatuses in the thermal circuit of the steam turbine plant, operating modes and parameters of the coolants, as well as the operating features of each of the apparatuses under consideration.
