Luknitsky’s Problem Book – Thermal Power Plants Problem Book focuses on issues related to power plant operating conditions and their impact on the plant’s thermal efficiency and energy cost, as well as on auxiliary equipment.
A significant number of problems are devoted to calculating the thermal power plant (TPP) and technical and economic calculations for typical equipment selection scenarios.
Luknitsky’s Problem Book – Thermal Power Plants Problem Book is intended for students majoring in thermal engineering, but it can also be useful for engineers already working in power plant operations, as most of the problems are of not only theoretical but also practical interest.
Luknitsky’s Problem Book – The Problem Book on Thermal Power Plants and Thermal Power Units was compiled for the course “Industrial Thermal Power Plants,” taught at the Molotov Moscow Power Engineering Institute to students specializing in industrial heat engineering. The problems cover the most important topics in the main sections of this course.
All textbooks and manuals on thermal power plants published to date have focused primarily on the thermal flow diagrams of the plants, their often quite minor details, and the influence of steam parameters on specific steam and heat consumption. These topics are presented with a significant number of examples and problems.
For this reason, this problem book provides fewer problems on these topics than those in the course sections that are typically under-covered, although they are the most important for engineers working in the operation of the thermal power plants.
During operation, the greatest attention must be paid to the operating mode of the plant as a whole and its individual components, as well as to auxiliary devices. However, as already noted, this primary area of plant operation is understudied and too schematically studied, usually without practical problems or examples.
Therefore, this book of problems focuses on the use of operating diagrams for steam extraction machines, operation according to specified electrical and thermal schedules, the impact of plant operating conditions on its thermal efficiency and the cost of generated energy, as well as on auxiliary power units and methods for reducing their energy consumption.
Several problems are given on the calculation and analysis of the fuel heat utilization coefficient at combined heat and power plants (CHP) and the efficiency of CHP plants for generating and dispensing electrical energy (using the method adopted by the Ministry of Electric Power Plants).
The final section of the book, “Luknitsky – Problem Book on Thermal Power Plants,” includes problems on technical and economic calculations for selecting one of the equipment options and on typical cases of verifying the feasibility of capital investments to improve the thermal efficiency of plants. These questions, despite their fundamental simplicity and uncomplicated methodology, usually pose a challenge to students, and the author considers their inclusion in the problem book to be very useful.
