Klyamkin’s book, *Thermal Testing of Power Plant Steam Turbine Units*, examines the key efficiency indicators and thermal characteristics of various types of steam turbine units. It provides guidelines for organizing and conducting thermal tests on these units at power plants, including tests on centrifugal electric and turbine-driven pumps.

This Klyamkin’s book, *Thermal Testing of Power Plant Steam Turbine Units* serves as a practical manual for technical personnel in commissioning and testing departments within power utility administrations and at power plants, as well as for staff at specialized organizations; it is also a useful resource for thermal engineering students who are familiar with the fundamentals of steam turbine unit theory and design.

The rapid expansion of the Soviet power industry requires operating personnel to further improve operational standards for both newly commissioned and existing power plant equipment, including machinery in turbine halls. This necessitates periodic, thorough verification of equipment performance—specifically its technical and economic indicators—through testing. Such testing aims to identify and rectify operational deficiencies and to ensure the timely execution of repairs, reconstruction, or modernization.

An equally important task is the testing of lead units from new series of steam turbine installations to evaluate whether they achieve their design efficiency and to compare them with the best modern examples of similar units. Domestic literature covering the thermal testing of steam turbine units comprises only a few books; the most significant among them are *Steam Turbine Testing* by A. V. Shcheglyaev and N. G. Morozov (published in 1937) and *Steam Turbogenerator Testing* by M. L. Ukhobotin (published by ORGRES in 1952).

Consequently, there is a pressing need for a new, more comprehensive guide on the thermal testing of steam turbine units at power plants. Such a guide should outline a sufficiently accurate and accessible method for conducting tests and plotting thermal performance curves for all types of units—including those with two controlled steam extractions, a configuration not addressed in the aforementioned books.

Furthermore, the book should cover the testing of centrifugal pumps—which account for the bulk of the unit’s auxiliary power consumption—as well as other relatively simple tests performed in the turbine halls of thermal power plants.

Comprehensive thermal tests are typically conducted by specialized organizations and usually only on lead units to establish standard performance characteristics. Therefore, there is a particular need for guidelines on simplified thermal testing—procedures that are sufficient to ensure proper unit operation and can be carried out by the small commissioning teams found at power plants.

These requirements form the basis of the present book. In preparing the text, the author drew not only on existing literature but also on the experience gained at the steam turbine laboratory he directed within the Leningrad power system. The methods for testing units with controlled steam extractions, determining the condenser vacuum correction, conducting tests with fixed steam distribution valve settings, and so forth, are presented in accordance with ORGRES recommendations.
