The textbook “Fundamentals of Thermal Power Engineering” has been published in four editions since 1941, the most recent of which dates back to 1949. Between 1951 and 1953, this book was translated and published in a number of people’s democracies. The widespread use of Litvin’s book “Fundamentals of Thermal Power Engineering” undoubtedly demonstrates the great need for a manual that would explain in elementary form the theory and practice of one of the most important sectors of the national economy—thermal power engineering.

Changes that have occurred during the described period in the training of personnel for thermal power plants and the requirements imposed on the personnel of these plants, as well as in the technology of generating electrical energy itself, forced the author, at the suggestion of the publisher, to significantly change the content of the book. First of all, taking into account the increased general level of knowledge of persons studying at the courses of training centers of power plants, the author allowed himself to refuse to present the basic provisions of related fields of knowledge – mathematics, mechanics, chemistry; in this part, only what is directly related to the topic presented and without which the coherence of the presentation would be violated is left. On the other hand, each employee of a power plant, for a clear understanding of the technological process of generating electrical energy in his area, needs to know how this process occurs in the neighboring area and at the entire plant as a whole. Which forced the author to present in much greater detail the operation of the main equipment of the thermal part of a power plant, automatic regulation of the processes in it, economic characteristics. Considering that this book Litvin – Fundamentals of Thermal Power Engineering is studied first, the author first sets out the content of the basic concepts related to the area of ​​knowledge in question, as well as the paths of development of energy. A brief description is given The energy system in practice and its operation. Data on the cost of plant construction and the net cost of electrical energy are provided. These changes made it possible to produce a new edition of Litvin’s book, “Fundamentals of Thermal Power Engineering.” It is structured more closely to general heat engineering courses.

The broad scope of the topic, especially when presented in an elementary manner, made the author’s task challenging. Therefore, receiving feedback on the book, especially from those who use it as a textbook, would be very useful.

Like previous editions, this book, “Fundamentals of Thermal Power Engineering,” is intended to serve as a training manual for blue-collar workers and mid-level technical personnel (foremen, foremen).

The author believes it can also serve as a textbook on general heat engineering and for training mechanics for factories and plants in all industries.
