Ukhobotin – Testing of Steam Turbogenerators: A Methodological Guide

The thermal testing of a steam turbogenerator should yield, firstly, an operational profile sufficient for planning purposes and, secondly—to the extent possible—all the data required to evaluate the efficiency of the machine itself, its auxiliary equipment, and the thermal cycle as a whole.
(From *Testing of Steam Turbogenerators: A Methodological Guide* by Ukhobotin): Naturally, the more detailed the picture of the entire installation’s operation obtained through testing, the easier it becomes to identify opportunities for rationalization and improvement. Such rationalization and enhancement of the system’s operation are critical factors that must be taken into account when conducting tests.
The system established by the Ministry of Power Stations—which mandates separate planning and standard-setting for heat (fuel) consumption—distinguishes between electricity generation via a condensing cycle and heat supply for external consumption; this framework clearly defines the minimum requirements for a test program.
The testing process must yield the specific performance characteristics necessary to facilitate this separate planning and standard-setting.
The efficiency of a steam turbogenerator is determined by the amount of heat consumed to produce 1 kWh of electricity.
To determine the heat consumption for electricity generation, it is necessary to know the steam mass flow rate as a function of the power output at the generator terminals, as well as the amount of heat consumed within the turbogenerator cycle (and subsequently replenished in the boiler) per kilogram of steam.
The heat consumed within the turbogenerator cycle (expressed in kcal/kg) is defined as the difference between the enthalpy of the steam at the turbine inlet and the enthalpy of either the condensate at the condenser outlet or the feedwater downstream of the final regenerative heater. This enthalpy difference is referred to as the “heat utilization” of the steam.
Assuming constant steam enthalpy at the turbine inlet… (with initial parameters held constant) the amount of heat utilized changes when the steam flow rate varies, due to the fact that…
