Nigmatulin — Heat Engines

The book *Heat Engines* by Nigmatulin covers the theory of thermal processes in steam turbines, gas turbines, and internal combustion engines; the general schematic layouts of thermal power plants; the designs of various types of steam turbines, gas turbines, and internal combustion engines; and certain auxiliary components of heat engines.

This textbook Nigmatulin — Heat Engines is intended for university students specializing in “Industrial Thermal Power Engineering.” It may also be useful to engineering and technical personnel who operate and maintain power plant equipment.

The book is based on the curriculum for the “Heat Engines” course for higher education institutions specializing in “Industrial Thermal Power Engineering” and comprises three sections.

The first section outlines the theory of thermal processes in steam turbines, steam distribution, control systems, protection mechanisms, lubrication systems, and issues regarding the combined generation of electricity and thermal energy. It also describes the designs of condensing turbines and turbines with controlled steam extraction, as well as the structural elements and characteristics of condensers and air-extraction devices.

The second section focuses on gas turbines and gas turbine units used in industrial thermal power engineering. It examines the layouts and cycles of gas turbine engines featuring regeneration, staged compression, and staged combustion; methods for enhancing the thermal stability of blading; control systems; protective devices; and the designs and characteristics of gas turbines, compressors, regenerators, and air coolers.

The third section covers thermodynamic and actual cycles, the theory of internal combustion engines, general principles regarding the configuration of assemblies and units, and the designs and characteristics of internal combustion engines. Carbureted engines, gas engines, diesel engines, and combined turbo-piston engines are examined.
