Losev — Steam Turbines and Condensing Equipment

Лосев - Паровые турбины и конденсационные устройства

Losev’s *Steam Turbines and Condensing Equipment* covers the theory, design, and operation of steam turbines, condensers, and the auxiliary machinery of steam turbine power plant units.

Primary attention is focused on turbines manufactured at Soviet plants or those widely used at power stations.

The book Losev — Steam Turbines and Condensing Equipment is intended as a textbook for the training and professional development of personnel operating steam turbine units; however, it can also serve as a descriptive course on steam turbines in energy-related educational institutions.

The first edition of Losev’s *Steam Turbines and Condensing Equipment* was published in 1930, and the book has since been reissued eight times. Over the years, nine editions have been distributed to power plants, educational institutions, and libraries across the country. Furthermore, the book has been translated into Polish, Romanian, and Chinese.

Each edition has been scrutinized by thousands of discerning readers. The author has received hundreds of letters containing advice, suggestions, and notes regarding specific omissions. Each new edition incorporated changes and improvements based on this feedback as well as advancements in science and technology.

In preparing the tenth—or “jubilee”—edition of *Steam Turbines and Condensing Equipment*, the author decided against altering the book’s structure and the method of presentation, both of which have stood the test of time. As before, the material is presented in such a way that a reader lacking the mathematics and physics background typically required to fully grasp the book’s content can still gain a clear understanding of the physical nature of the phenomena discussed. The material is arranged in order of increasing complexity, ensuring that the reader is already familiar with the fundamentals of turbine theory and design before tackling more advanced topics—such as turbine operation under variable load conditions, failure analysis, and so on.

Domestically manufactured turbines play a leading role at our power plants. Consequently, in preparing this edition, the primary focus has been placed on domestic turbine designs; descriptions of the latest high-capacity and district-heating turbines—which reflect recent trends in steam turbine technology—have been added. Data regarding turbines from foreign manufacturers has been somewhat reduced.

The introduction of advanced technology at our power plants necessitates a strong emphasis on operational standards; even high-quality equipment with a high design efficiency can yield poor results if operated by unskilled personnel. With the release of this edition, the author aims, as always, to provide whatever assistance possible in the training of operations staff.
