Tsvetkov, Grigoryev — Heat and Mass Transfer: A Textbook
The textbook *Heat and Mass Transfer* by Tsvetkov and Grigoryev outlines the theoretical foundations and calculation methods for processes involving heat conduction in solids, convective heat transfer in single-phase media, heat transfer during condensation and boiling, and radiative heat transfer between bodies separated by a transparent or an absorbing-emitting medium. It examines the theoretical principles of coupled heat and mass transfer processes as applied to thermal power engineering—including industrial applications—and presents the fundamentals of the thermal-hydraulic design of heat exchangers. The theoretical material is supplemented by numerous worked examples.
This textbook *Heat and Mass Transfer* by Tsvetkov and Grigoryev is intended for university students specializing in thermal power engineering and thermal engineering. It serves as a study guide for the “Heat and Mass Transfer” course, which is a component of the broader discipline “Theoretical Foundations of Thermal Engineering.” The book provides a detailed treatment of heat and mass transfer problems relevant to the operating conditions of thermal and nuclear power plants, as well as heat and mass transfer equipment in industrial facilities.
For many years, the standard textbook for university students in thermal power and thermal engineering specialties was *Heat Transfer* by V.P. Isachenko, V.A. Osipova, and A.S. Sukomel; the last edition of that book appeared in 1981. In preparing the current textbook, the authors took into account the significant advances made in the theory and calculation methods of heat and mass transfer since that time, as well as the evolution of the higher education system into a three-tier structure: Bachelor, Graduate Engineer, and Master. This created a need for a textbook that would be accessible to a wide range of students in terms of the scope of its theoretical material.
The current stage of technological and industrial development, along with the widespread integration of computers into engineering practice, necessitates a higher level of knowledge among engineers in fundamental sciences—specifically, in the theory of heat and mass transfer. It is precisely this knowledge that enables the development and refinement of calculation methods for heat and mass transfer processes and the creation of new technological equipment.
In writing this textbook, *Heat and Mass Transfer*, the authors (Tsvetkov and Grigoryev) took into account the specific requirements of university thermal power engineering programs and drew upon their own experience teaching the course at the Department of Theoretical Foundations of Heat Engineering at the Moscow Power Engineering Institute (MPEI).
Practical classes, student research projects, individual calculation assignments, and course design projects play a vital role in the training of thermal power engineering specialists. To support this, authors from the MPEI Department of Theoretical Foundations of Heat Engineering have previously produced a textbook [51], and other educational literature [8] is also available. However, there is currently a lack of guides dedicated to solving standard engineering calculation problems involving the components of heat and mass transfer equipment. Consequently, the authors deemed it necessary to provide worked examples covering all the main sections of the “Heat and Mass Transfer” course. The authors believe that studying these examples will foster a better understanding of heat and mass transfer theory and help develop the skills needed to solve practical problems.
The book Tsvetkov, Grigoryev — Heat and Mass Transfer: A Textbook presents detailed examples of problem-solving using computers. The bibliography includes virtually all currently available reference books and manuals.
In conclusion, the authors express their gratitude to the faculty members of the MPEI Department of Theoretical Foundations of Heat Engineering who participated in discussions regarding the manuscript and assisted in preparing it for publication.
