Metals and Alloys – Unified Numbering System – SAE HS-1086/2023 ASTM DS56M
The Unified Numbering System (UNS) has been in use since 1974. The fourteenth edition contains over 5,720 designations within this international system for the identification of metals and alloys. Since the publication of the thirteenth edition in 2017, 124 new UNS designations have been added.
More than 875 revisions have been made to the updated cross-references for representative specifications and specification indices. The lists of titles for all ASTM and SAE specifications cited in the cross-references have been expanded. In total, approximately 1,500 changes have been incorporated into the fourteenth edition of *Metals and Alloys in the Unified Numbering System*.
A UNS designation is not a specification; it does not establish requirements for delivery conditions—such as mechanical properties, heat analysis tolerances, heat treatment, packaging, marking, or quality control. Rather, UNS designations serve as identification numbers for metals and alloys for which controlling requirements have been established and published by technical societies and standards-setting organizations, including The Aluminum Association, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), ASTM International, SAE International, NACE International, the American Welding Society (AWS), the Copper Development Association (CDA), and ISO.
The Unified Numbering System (UNS) functions thanks to the efforts of a group of experienced, highly qualified metallurgists, each responsible for a specific series of metals and alloys. Without their dedication and expertise, this book—and the Unified Numbering System (UNS) itself—could not exist.
